You are currently viewing Guidelines: how to use them in your drawing

Guidelines

Guidelines are of import, almost everyone uses them in varying degrees. In the beginning, you utilize them a lot and later when y'all accept more do, yous can arrive with fewer guidelines. In my classes, I call guidelines the cheat sheets of drawing. You utilise the guidelines simply makes them disappear again past erasing or painting if your work is nigh done. Nobody needs to know how y'all have built up the drawing once it is finished.

Practice one

Draw a freehand circle. A slice of printer paper is fine. Think of it every bit a warming-up exercise. It is okay if it does not piece of work perfectly on the first endeavor.

Difficult?

Guidelines are like cheat sheets

Endeavour it this fashion with guides:
Apply a ruler and put a (very slight!) horizontal line of 6 cm (or half dozen inches). Put a dash at 3 cm (or 3 inches)  and draw a vertical line with three cm (or 3 inches) above and below the horizontal.

Now you only have the outermost points of your lines to draw a small bulge.

Plow your paper to make it easier to depict the bend of your wrist. Erase your horizontal and vertical line.

And… Not merely still?

Compare your commencement circumvolve, better, no?

Not satisfied? Effort again! Nobody is counting!
Practice makes perfect.

Hatching

In the previous task you've drawn a circle and I tin continue there with my story about hatching. Hatching tin be used to create a spatial form or indicate what kind of surface the object has.

Desire to know more almost surface and texture? Read my post nearly textures!

When I draw multiple lines on my circle, hatching. It seems a bit more 3D. Considering I accept accented the shape with but a few lines information technology .appears to be much more spacious.

There are more ways how to apply guidelines, y'all can draw a cylinder, a cube, cone and other geometric shapes.

Like this practice and want to try more?

Meet the following animated graphics and attempt to draw other shapes, by using guides and then erasing them once you've built the shapes. The more practice you get, the fewer guidelines you will need.

elips-tekenen-hulplijnen

The cylinder

Start in the same mode as the circumvolve. Only make the vertical line shorter than the circle. Then yous connect together the ends, ensure that you brand a bulge. The ellipse has no corners. So you depict of the outer border a line on both sides. And repeat the process of the ellipse again. So all yous have to do is erase the guides.

The cone

This bones form is very similar to the cylinder. You don't utilise two lines on the side of the ellipse, but yous put a line direct up from the center. From in that location, yous are connecting the top to the ends of the ellipse. And again erase the guidelines!

The cube

Draw a square with four equal sides. From there yous draw three lines with the aforementioned angle. All the lines run parallel and are all the aforementioned length. Make certain these oblique lines are slightly shorter than the sides of your square. If you accept fatigued all the oblique lines you can draw the back of the cube. Let's double-cheque: if you accept fatigued these lines in the right way, the sides of the rear square are equally long as the sides of the first square.
